onyx questions, answered
Where our hand-carved onyx comes from, what the photo shows, how it's finished and cared for, and how shipping and returns work.
Where does the stone come from?
Our onyx comes from a single source in Balochistan, Pakistan. It's carved by hand there, by artisans working in lineage, and finished in our studio in San Diego. The Calacatta Vagli marble in our trays and coasters comes from Balochistan too.
The agate, amethyst and geodes in Cut Stone come from Madagascar and Brazil, and our jewelry is set with natural gemstones. Every listing names its stone.
Is the piece in the photo the one I'll get?
Yes, for every one-of-one piece. Each one is photographed on its own, and that's the one we pack. There's nothing to compare it to.
Where a listing has more than one in stock, the photo shows the design and the stone, and yours will carry its own veining.
What's the finish?
Raw stone, sealed with beeswax. We don't put chemical polish on our onyx. Polish would make the stone tougher and our making easier, and it would stop being raw stone.
How do I look after it?
Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, and keep it out of standing water. Our vases hold water for fresh stems; empty them and wipe them dry when the flowers are done.
There's more in our guide, How to Clean Stone.
How often do new pieces arrive?
Every two weeks we open a crate and photograph the next batch. Everyone on The Crate list sees them first. You can join at the bottom of any page.
If a piece sells out, will it come back?
Not that piece. Sold out here means gone. The form may come back in a new stone, but the unit never repeats.
Jewelry is different. Our designs are made from local material and usually restock within a day.
What are Studio Seconds?
Pieces with a small fault from the carve, like a soft edge or an uneven corner. Each listing names its fault, and they're priced for it. Every one is one of one, and sold as final sale. You'll find them in Studio Seconds.
What is the jewelry made of?
Demi-fine metals: gold vermeil, 18k gold plate and gold-filled chain, and solid 925 sterling silver, set with natural stones like moonstone, jasper, labradorite, lapis and pearl. It's handmade in San Diego, and every listing names its metal and stone.
Can I see the pieces in person?
We don't have a shop yet. We're a studio in San Diego, and we show at pop-ups across California. The Crate list hears about them first.
Where do I find the size of a specific piece?
Every listing gives that piece's own measurements. Each collection also answers its own questions: catchall trays, catchall bowls, pedestal bowls, vases, vessels, lidded jars, coasters, candle holders and cut stone.
How does shipping work?
Every order ships from our studio in San Diego. Ground delivery in the U.S. takes 3 to 6 days, and it's free on orders over $100. We also ship to 25 countries across Asia, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. That takes about a week, priced at checkout.
If a piece arrives damaged, photograph it as it comes out of the box and email hello@saeadesigns.com. We'll sort out a refund or an exchange. Returns are open for 30 days, unused and in the original packaging, with return shipping taken from the refund.
