Nacre builds in layers, one sheet laid over the next, for years inside the shell before it ever caught light. That slow accretion is the whole face of this piece: a broad teardrop of mother-of-pearl, cut and left to its own grain, cream turning to warm gold where the surface bends. Tip it toward the light and the sheen travels across it. No two shells lay their layers the same way.
Hung from a gold paperclip chain on a hammered ring, it falls to the center of the chest and does the whole job alone. The chain is consistently made. The shell it carries is not, and neither is the woman wearing it. Wipe it dry, keep it out of standing water, and store it away from other chains where the edge can catch.
