This is a nightstand piece. Six inches across and only two deep, so it takes rings and earrings at the end of the night without turning into a bowl of clutter — shallow enough that everything in it stays visible and findable in the dark. Set it near a lamp. Onyx is translucent at this thickness, and the rim lights from within when a light source sits low beside it. Peach and cream means it enters a warm room without adding a color you have to manage — against oak, brass and unbleached linen it settles into the palette. Put it in a cool grey room instead and it becomes the one warm thing on the surface.

Bands run horizontally across the body. Cream, then apricot, then a fine gold line, then cream again. Look down into it and the same bands read as rings, tightening toward the center where the stone grew slowest. The carver left the surface raw, so you can see the tool travel across the interior, fine and radial, the way a record reads. One of a kind. The exact piece you'll receive.

The name is Greek — onyx, "fingernail" — for the banding, the same layered translucence you get holding a nail up to light. Banded stone like this was being cut into vessels in the Egyptian Old Kingdom, which makes a shallow bowl for small precious things roughly the oldest job anyone has given the material.
