Put it where it will be seen at a distance — a nightstand, a console, the corner of a dresser. Six inches across and two deep. Shallow enough that rings stay findable, wide enough to take a watch and a pair of earrings beside them. Set it near a lamp: onyx is translucent at this thickness, and the rust band warms from inside when light comes in low from the side.

The rim is where the color went. Caramel and rust with one dark chocolate vein sweeping across the top edge, over a field of bone and pale grey. Near that edge the stone opens into a small crystalline pocket — a cavity the onyx grew around and never filled, left exactly as it was found. The carver worked the surface raw, so the tool travel stays visible across the interior. Two pounds. One of a kind. The exact piece you'll receive.

• The crystalline pocket at the rim and the fine seams through the body are how the stone formed. They are characteristics, not damage, and they were not filled or corrected.

The banding is a record of water. Each line is a pause — a season when mineral-rich water slowed and left a different trace before moving again. Read the rim of this one from the outside in and you are reading that sequence in order, which is the same thing a geologist does with a core sample.
