ORIGIN
Silica-rich water fills a cavity and dries there, slowly, until what is left is opal. Where manganese and iron oxide reach that water first, they crystallize outward in branching lines and the silica sets around them. Gray is what the field looks like when the iron ran heavier than the manganese.
