This is the one that reads like furniture. Tobacco and caramel with plum running through it, so on a walnut dresser or a dark oak console it looks like it belongs to the wood rather than sitting on top of it. That is a harder trick than contrast, and it makes this the right piece for a bedroom with dark case goods, where a pale stone reads like it wandered in from another room. One of one. Shallow and wide, so rings stay findable and a watch lies flat beside them. Pull the plum out once more somewhere in the room — dried stems, a book spine, a cushion — and the whole palette tightens around it. Set it near a lamp: onyx is translucent at this thickness, and the caramel warms from inside when the light comes in low from the side.

Bands sweep across the interior in wide concentric rings, irregular enough to read closer to wood grain than to stripes. Plum and burgundy veins cut across them. Thin white quartz seams run through the body in bright lines — those are healed fractures, places where the stone broke underground and mineral water refilled the gap. Layered stone like this is the reason cameo carving exists. A carver cuts down through one band into the one beneath, and the image appears in a second color without a drop of pigment. Rome built an entire portrait art on that principle. The bands you are looking at are the same mechanism, left uncut.
