Nearly ten inches tall and weighing close to five pounds, this isn't a small crystal for a bedside table. Set it on a console, shelf, coffee table or pedestal and let it function as luxurious sculpture. From the front it is crystalline and luminous. From the back, almost entirely rock. The outside gives almost nothing away. Ochre stone, weathered and irregular, the surface left close to the way it came from the earth. Turn it around and the whole thing opens.

White quartz grows inward from the walls in long, crowded points. At the center, the crystal shifts into amethyst, pale violet first and then deep purple where the cavity narrows. The color wasn't placed there. It developed as trace elements entered the quartz while the crystals were growing.

CRYSTAL — Dense white quartz points move inward toward a concentrated amethyst center, shifting from clear and milky white through lavender to deep violet. The photo guides you to the color; it isn't a contract.

Amethyst is assigned in crystal practice to the crown chakra and traditionally kept for clarity, calm and protection. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning "not intoxicated," reflecting the ancient belief that the stone could guard its wearer against drunkenness.

The documented part is stranger enough. Amethyst is quartz. Its purple color develops when small amounts of iron are incorporated into the crystal structure and later altered by natural irradiation. White quartz and purple amethyst here are not separate inventions. They are variations of the same mineral growing under different conditions inside one cavity.

ORIGIN

Brazil

A hollow space formed inside the host rock. Mineral-rich fluid entered it, and silica began crystallizing along the walls. Quartz grew inward over time, point after point. As the chemistry changed, sections of that quartz developed violet color and became amethyst.

The exterior was left rough. The geode was opened so the formation inside could be seen.

One side records the rock that held it. The other records what grew in the dark.

No two cavities mineralize the same way. This formation happens once.
