Nine inches by five is a valet tray, and that is a specific job. It takes a watch laid flat with the strap open, a ring, a folded pair of glasses, whatever comes out of a pocket at the end of the day. Rectangular rather than round, so things sit in a row instead of a pile, and shallow enough that nothing gets lost under anything else.

The figure in this stone reads as wood. Swirled and grained and burled, closer to walnut than to marble — which means it sits on an oak or walnut dresser and looks like it was always there, instead of announcing itself as stone on wood. Put it beside a brass lamp and the whole surface warms. Set it where a pocket gets emptied: a nightstand, an entry console, the corner of a desk.

Dark tobacco through the field. Along one long edge the banding runs pale and the stone opens into a band of cream and crystalline white — that edge was left rough rather than cut back to match the rest. Before glass was common, this material was the window. Early churches across Italy and Byzantium glazed their openings with sheets of banded calcite cut thin enough to pass light — Orvieto and San Miniato still have them, and the light that comes through is amber and slow. It is the same stone, cut thinner.
