Amethyst grew into the pocket first. Purple at the points, a white quartz band behind it, rough rock at the rim. Then it was coated. The gold and bronze across the crystal faces is a metallic finish applied in a chamber, not a color the amethyst grew with. The structure is the Earth's. The shine is ours.

THE FINISH

Physical vapor deposition bonds a micro-thin metallic layer to the crystal faces inside a vacuum chamber. It is the same process behind the PVD on our metal jewelry, and the same one used on watch cases and surgical tools. It does not flake, fade, or wash off. It is also not the stone's own color, and we would rather tell you than let the photograph imply otherwise.

IN THE TRADE

Amethyst carries more lore than almost any stone. The Greeks named it amethystos, "not intoxicated," and carved drinking cups from it believing it would keep a person sober. Bishops wore it for centuries. In modern crystal practice it is assigned to the third-eye and crown chakras and kept for clarity, intuition, and sleep.

We report the tradition; we don't claim it. What we will vouch for is documented: amethyst was priced alongside ruby and emerald until the Brazilian deposits opened in the nineteenth century and the supply changed overnight. And that the gold on these faces came from a chamber.

ORIGIN

No one designed the cavity. Gas left a pocket in the rock, water filled it, and amethyst grew inward until the space closed. We added the metal. Both halves of that sentence are true. The geode occurs once.
