Wear them when you want one clean point of light at the jaw. They are small and they swing, so they do their best work with hair up or tucked behind the ear, against a bare shoulder or a plain neckline. The blue in the stone is cool-toned, so it lifts navy, charcoal, slate and black, and goes quiet against warm camel or rust.

Keep the neck simple and let these carry everything above the collarbone. They also take a fine gold chain better than you would expect — the silver stays cool, the gold stays warm, and neither one competes. Light enough to forget by noon, plain enough for a workday, which is the point of a pair like this.

An oval moonstone cabochon in a stepped sterling bezel, hung on a sterling shepherd's hook so it moves with you. Turn your head and the blue crosses the stone and vanishes. That flash is called adularescence, and no two stones throw it the same way.

The setting is consistently made. The flash in the stone is not — no two cabochons catch light the same way, and yours will not match the photograph exactly.

Moonstone is assigned in crystal practice to the crown and third-eye chakras, called the stone of new beginnings and kept for intuition. It is the June birthstone. We report the tradition; we don't claim it.

The optical fact is the better story. The blue is not a color in the stone at all — moonstone is two feldspars stacked in microscopic layers, and light scattering between those layers throws the sheen. Mineralogists call it adularescence. Romans thought it was moonlight that had gone solid, and Lalique built half the Art Nouveau canon out of it.
