Natural smoky quartz cluster. Use it as a decorative object on a coffee table, a console, a mantel, or a bookshelf. It is a low, wide piece, so it wants a surface with depth rather than a narrow ledge, and it reads best with nothing directly behind it. Set it so the points run across your line of sight rather than pointing at you. Warm light finds the brown. Cool light flattens it to grey.

Smoky quartz is quartz that took damage. Aluminum settled into the lattice where silicon should have been, and radiation from the rock around it worked on that flaw over a stretch of time with no witnesses. The lattice kept the mark. That is the entire color. Nothing was added to it.

The base is milky and rough, broken where it came away. The points rise off it in a run, clear through the bodies and darkening toward the terminations where the color sat longest. Set it down and it takes the surface it is on. The books beside it stop being the thing you look at.

Quartz is seven on the Mohs scale, harder than a steel blade, so dusting and handling will not mark the faces and it needs no sealing or oiling. The points are transparent enough to carry light down their length, which is why the tips brighten when the light is behind them and go dark when it is in front. Sun is the one real threat. Prolonged UV pales the smoke and does not bring it back.

In Scotland it is cairngorm, cut from the Grampians and set into dirk hilts and the brooches of Highland dress for centuries. It was regalia long before it was a shop stone. Modern crystal practice treats it as a steadying piece and keeps it near a desk or a door. We make no claims about what a rock does to a person.
