At sixteen inches it sits at the base of the throat and the crystal drops into the hollow. At eighteen it falls just below the collarbone and leaves room to layer something finer underneath. Short is the sharper look. Either way this is the only piece you need above the neckline — put your volume at the ear instead.

The pendant is a raw crystal, uncut and unpolished, capped in gold at the top. It came out of the ground with a point at both ends, which happens when a crystal grows suspended in fluid instead of anchored to a wall. Most quartz grows attached and terminates once. This one had nothing to hold on to.

MAKE — Raw double-terminated quartz, sold in the trade as Herkimer diamond. Gold-plated cap, bail and flat herringbone chain.
FORM — Flat herringbone, high-shine, flat-lying, broken by a single rough stone at center. Polished line, unpolished stone.
WEAR — 16"–18" adjustable. Lobster clasp with extender chain. Lay flat to store, and never fold or bend the chain — herringbone kinks permanently and does not come back.

The chain is consistently made. The crystal is not — each one grew its own faces, and yours will not match the photograph.

Herkimer diamonds are kept in crystal practice as amplifiers, assigned to the crown, and called attunement stones. We report the tradition; we don't claim it.

The geology is the part worth knowing. A double-terminated crystal forms free-floating in a pocket of fluid, growing outward in both directions with nothing to attach to. It is uncommon enough that the shape alone tells you how the stone spent its formation. The originals come from a specific band of Cambrian dolostone in upstate New York, roughly half a billion years old, and the name has since spread to double-terminated quartz from elsewhere.
